Editorial job - Magazine Editor

Being a magazine editor you have to make sure overall everything contributed to go in the magazine looks good, is interesting and is going to sell to the audience. You could be an online magazine editor, or working on a magazine sold on the shelves in a big company as a team or on a certain section. As part of the job role they have to generate ideas for features, edit and proofread and work a lot with photographers and artists. You have to be aware of whats going on in the world whatever the world you are talking about it. If it was a fashion magazine they were editing they would have to know about the latest trends photographers, fashion statements and market. An interest in the subject of the magazine always helps when you want to be a magazune editor because it makes it easier to work and quicker, however you don't need to be a specialit in the subject as other pople are going to be putting ideas and pfeatures foward which you have fit into the magazine. Typical work activties in thsi type of job would be:
  • overlooking the feature articles, pictures and content
  • working and generating ideas with the writing team
  • maganging the writing staff and freelance workers
  • rejecting, editing or re-writing articles if needed
  • making sure all teams are working togther mainly photgraphy and the writing team.
  • attending photshoots
  • hiring and negotiating freelance workers wages for a certain issue or
  • dealing with legal matters of the magazine
  • influencing and breifing writng teams and photographers with a style and idea.
A main role in this job is to promote and raise the profile of the magazine whether it be covering abig event coming up or a big fashion statement or new band depnign on the magazine style and audience. networking with other people at big events to get people talking about the magazine and wanting to work with it. You are in charge of the final product by yourself or as part of a editorial team and then it goes to the head of the magazine to have a final review. Starting salaries vary with the type of magazine, the popularity and audience. The smallest magazines can pay around £15,000, but the typical salary range for most others is around £25,000 to £40,000. However depending on the amount of experience you have and the publication this salary can get a lot higher.

Creative job - Costume Designer

Being a costume designer in the media industry means you have to read the scripts through to get to know the genre, story and character personalities because your main role is costumes. Being a costume designer you could be on any time of filming set whether its for a film, series, reality or live show so the costumes vary for who your dressing and the amount of people your dressing. One of the first things you see is the characters clothing it could be a distinctive part of creating a certain character in a film or series. They work with costume researches depending on the production whether its a film set in early time periods or a costume for a reality show for the presenter. You should have skills in design elements using colours and fabrics to create fashion statements in the production. Their work is critical in TV shows, series and movies. They consult with he director to make sure they are creating the right vision for the scene for every character. In some films or series there are a lot of extras which also need to be dressed, being the costume designer is a big part of the pre production and production. usually costume designers sketch their work by hand to show the detail they want in them however for TV presenters they usually just research clothing because it doesn't need to fit to a certain character. Illustrating their final design is important because it explains the fabric, details, props and accessories in the costumes. It's a big job and they are a big part of production and creating the overall look. Directors usually want a costume designer who is experienced in sewing and designing so that they can explain the construction of their designs to the costume team. It depends on the production to how many people are costume designing on set. Everyone is given a budget on all the production teams so keeping in budget is a big part of costume designing because of the material and workers, props and all other accessories. Once all costumes are designed and everything is approved by the director then it becomes the role of the wardrobe assistants to take the clothing and dress actors or people in the production. Fashion/costume designers earn around £31.00 hourly on an average depending on the production but it can be a much higher wage than this if its a big film or TV series. Costumes tell an audience a lot about a character, including his or her age, social status, occupation and era. A costume designer visually establishes the identity and personality of characters by designing the clothing they will wear during the production.

Creative job - Make up artist

Being a make up artist in the the media industry means your in charge of how make up looks on screen and what kind of make up needs to be done. You could be on the set of a comedy, drama or horror series/film this means the skills you have should be a wide range. Make up is a big part of some productions especially for films because they define a character and how they are perceived to an audience. If the production is a horror film the make up is going to be scary maybe or include blood or scars which is completely opposite to what we'd maybe see in a comedy production. They could be on the set of all kinds of productions, they make over presenters, models, performers and actors. Make up is a big part of some production in a film because it's like a special effect on an actor it creates the scene or a character. Make up is a type of special effect and is the representation of someone whether they are a real person or acting, they have to create an image for people. Some speciliase in just special effects make up but the range is jobs for a make up artist is fashion, theatrical, special effects, airbrushing or high definiton make up. Depending on the job and what production it's for they can be part of big teams or they can work alone. They get scripts and have to be involved with directors and costume designers to create the right look for a scene or filming. they have to have an up to date knowledge of beauty and new make up products and designs and make sure they budget the materials they use for the production. They have to be involved with finance to do this so that the right products are used and in budget. Make up artists sometimes have to work to tight deadlines on set's if there is a deadline on a project or day. They have to be flexible and able to be needed all the time on set or off to do quick touch ups, or special effects.  They can be used for make up in any time period for any type of role. make up artist can be self employed or have a n agent. They can work free lance maybe just on one production or they could be part of a company and used for all the productions they produce like films or tv series or theatre.  The average salary for a make up artist who's been working for a year or more in theatrical special effects or performance make up is on the scale of £30,000 - £54,000 a year. 

Technical Job

A media technician is very important in media departments. They are there to help anyone with any problems they might have. They are important on TV or film sets in case anything goes wrong with the cameras, lighting, audio, computers or special effects. They are responsible for making sure things are set up properly and helping out anyone on the production team that may need it. You would have to have the right skills and confidence with the equipment to get this job because it's important everything in a production goes right and isn't delayed. They are the technical maintinacne for the place.

Marketing Job

A marketing job is basically where you are incharge of making sure this product is promoted. If its a film or tv show or some other media related product you have to find the market for it and market it to them people. You spend most time with the producers and director because they know what product they want to create and so can tell you how to market it and give you an idea of who the audience is. They will use all types of technolgy to market this product like phones, online social networking sites, social media and banner advertising to sell this product and let people know about to before it comes out. They get people to go out and advetise the products they have made to market this film. So they are incahrge of someone and making sure they sell this product or advertise this product properly.

Legal Job

Being a music lawyer is a legal job in the media industry. To be one you have to have knowledge about the music industry and major record labels. They play a big part in helping bands and artist get noticed and get record deals. They sometimes help bands with negotiating record labels and getting live performance contracts on behalf of the artist or band. They work with all types of people in media and music industry, like producers, record labels, managers, songwriters sorting out music publishing, placement and other contracts for their clients. They are basically a lawyer just for artists and bands making sure everything gets copyrighted and they are treated right in the music industry. they can file a law suit if their clients property or copyrights are infringed.

Financial Job

Head of finance is an important job in the media because this is what is needed to create a production and make sure it happens. Everything involved in the production of a media project uses money so |head of finance has to make sure the right money goes to everyone who's part of all the pre-production, production and post-production including the cast and crew. This job is almost like an administrative job but usually someone in charge of finance would report to an administrative officer rather than work beside them. In this Job you they are responsible for planning, directing, controlling all financial and everyone involved and human resources. Because they are in charge of the money head of finance generally go to the big meetings with the council, this is to sort out what money is going where because without them everyone couldn't do their job because their would be no budget so therefore no structure and maybe a loss in the production. The main jobs in head of finance are to manage accounting and financial systems and maintain full and accurate accounting records. Oversee or monitor everyone else to ensure they are doing there job right involving the finance and recommend corrective actions if needed.

Editoral Job

A film or video editor is responsible for cutting together all of the original footage to create drafts and then a final piece of work. They should create a professional finished product suitable for broadcasting. The material could be footage, audio, sound effects or all three depending on what media purpose the editing is for. The is the main role in the post production process because its where the film or video comes together and people can start to see what the final product might look like, also is determines the quality and delivery of the final product to everyone else and most importantly the audience. In this job you would mostly spend time with the director to get their view on how it should look, his opinion is the most important. Depending on the media project editors may be very involved in creating the narrative, structure or tone of the programme or film. In some situations, this is where editors are given freedom to create an edit how they want to see it, while others may just be needed to operate the machine, get the editing done how the director wants it. Editors usually make a few cuts until they get a final edit.

Creative Job

Animation Designers use animation and graphics software for their job. They are used for cartoon TV programmes or any motion graphics or animation that might need to be in a programme or film. Its a good job to have but its a lot of responsibilty if the film or programme is all animation because they're in charge of all the ideas and work before them everyone has done, they have to design it how the director sees it. They can design and develop in 2-D or 3-D animations for a variety of media purposes. They create charactars, special effects, graphics for websites, multimedia presentations and games. They animate images which makes them come to life to make a sequence of moving images. Their work is found in all sorts of media, adverts, music videos and feature films. Animation designers and usually interested in art and design and have good IT skills.

Admistrative Job

Television production assistants are responsible for the administration, organisation and secretarial work involved in producing a television programme. The work includes assisting actors and the crew, issuing scripts, dealing with travel and accommodation bookings and sorting out enquiries and other paperwork this is all helping with he production because all of these things need to be sorted for there to be a production. Being a production assistant is actually very important because even though your not as high as the person telling you what to do, your actually in charge of doing it and things wouldn't get done without you. A production assistant may work on different kinds of programmes, such as news, reality television shows, soap operas, dramas and comedies. They are usually involved at all stages of a project, working alongside everyone from early stages. Some tasks assistants would normally have to do are, attending production meetings, typing, editing, copying and distributing scripts, shedules or call sheets for cast memebers and crew. They also have to organise travel and accomodation arrangements for cast, crew and production executives, and at times running errands for them. Then finally they are mostly in charge of dealing with accounts and expenses.
